Stressed, Scared, Worried

My partner, a bright, energetic 64-year old, ultramarathoner and dancer, collapsed 5 days ago as a blod clot entered his brain. His motor functions are OK, but he has aphasia and loss of executive function. I am scared for him and looking for all the tools that I can find to help him get better.

    Bobcat,
I am Author & Motivation Speaker for post-stroke recovery to help and inspire others & 65 years old with aphasia. The Power of I Believe, A book of motivation, encouragement and inspirational thoughts after a stroke, a Christian-themed book written to help stroke survivors and others touched by a disability regain their faith and strength as they recover and move forward with their lives. Though I wrote this book with stroke survivors in mind, the feedback I have received through my blog and Facebook page has shown me that The Power of I Believe is a source of inspiration for anyone who needs it. Everyone experiences doubt at some point—whether in themselves or in God—and this is especially true after a sudden and traumatic event. I know from experience. In December 2006 I experienced a sudden stroke, which left me battling aphasia. As part of my recovery, I returned to the journals I had kept for many years to find the same inspiration that had motivated me throughout my life. Through these meditations, I came to understand The Power of I Believe. www.robertleefields.com/

    sprayer1,
stressed, worried, scared. hi, i too have had a lot of anxiety since i had a heart attack almost 2 yrs ago. i am on 5 meds each day which is hard to do. i never took any medication up until my heart attack. i have been lucky even though my heart was damaged & doesnt work at 100% yet but i havent had any problems except being tired for about a month after & lost almost 30lbs. i have gained 20lbs back & now weigh 190. i am 6 feet tall so now i am at a good weight! not a great way to loose weight though!! just wanted to comment & say that when i think about being worried if its going to happen again or how long do i have to live now when before i never thought about it i just realize i am alive, much more fortunate then the people getting off their plane flight & are killed by a gunman before they get to their destination, maybye none of those people had any health issues and they are gone in a second, so just realize that no one knows when its all going to end so just because we have issues with our hearts we can live a lot longer than some 100% healthy people with nothing wrong. the first thing i did after my attack after a week was to start walking. i only walked a little the first month & now i walk a lot & just came back from hiking a pretty big mountain in az with my 25 yr old friend and i kept right up with him!! stay strong & positive & walk, it will help.

    MeliaChia,
First, know that five days out is eternally early. SO much will change in the upcoming days, weeks and months. Hold on to that and know that it is true. Second, talk to the therapists (NOT the doctors) ..... you should have been seen by an OT, PT and Speech therapist by now and get them to give you some assistance. Do you have an iPad ... there are some great games to get the brain moving ..... Take notes, listen to everyone, believe only what you want and know that NO ONE can tell you what will happen or where you will be a year from now. My husband had his stroke and I was told he would need nursing care in a facility the rest of his life. Two years later, we just got back from our first cross country flight. Nothing is the same as it was, and everything is harder (he walks with a cane and has no use of his left arm), but everything is doable and he is with us. Hang in there.

    steedo,
Hi Stroke Bloke here. Step one read Martin Doigs book- The Brains way of Healing..... The closer to the event the better the recovery to start doing whatever one can do. They gave me beads, I went from board room to beads but itook threading beads as seriously!. I went to an Aphasia seminar a few months ago [ I didnt and havent got it ] but the same applied whatever therapy is available do it twice as much as they say. ** Get on a Pons machine as per Doig's book. OR use a 9 volt battery on the tongue 20 mins a day in its place [ my invention cos no one has a pons machine in Western Australia.] By coincidence i am 64 also! Your Partner will come good and if there is a chance like everything in life input v output is what is required. Your job is denial and treating your partner in a way that he feels valued. help but just a little less than you think he needs. Good luck life has changed but that doesn't mean life is finished !!

    LesterS,
Go to the LORD! BUY/OPEN YOUR BIBLE--(GET ONE THAT HAS THE NEW KING JAMES VERSION AND THE MESSAGE BIBLE TRANSLATIONS) AND READ IT. ASK THE LORD TO GIVE YOU UNDERSTANDING/ REVELATION. SEEK THE LORD FOR YOURSELF FIRST. ASK GOD TO CLEANSE/PURIFY YOUR HEARTS. SEEK A GOOD BIBLE BELIEVING/FAITH FILLED/ANOINTED HOUSE OF GOD. ASK GOD TO LEAD YOU WHERE TO GO---HE WILL, AS HE DID FOR ME. LIFE IS LIKE A VAPOR THat .APPEARETH FIR A LITTLE WHILE--'THEN VANISHES AWAY. Ask YOURSELF WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT IN LIFE. WHAT IS/WAS/SHALL BE YOUR LIFE BETWEEN THE TWO DASHES OF EVERYONE'S LIFE. WHEN WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE LORD IN ALL OUR WAYS, HE DIRECTS OUR PATHS. WHEN You ASK the LORD FOR HELP FROM YOUR HEART---HE WILL HELP YOU. BE BLESSED, IN JESUS' NAME! I WILL PRAY FOR BOTH OF YOU! GALE
