My Heart Journey

My First Heart Attack was November of 1994 after responding to a house with reorted with children trapped. Smoke Inhalstion was the cause. A lot of this points back to Rutherford County. First If I had intervention in 1996 I may have never had my second heart attack. It was not approved by Workers comp. A month later I had my second heart attack while at a rescue scene on Manson Pike. Two days later I had 5 By-passes. (Remember no Intervention need,) So here I was done in my career at a young age. We tried a malpractice suit against the treating Doctor but they are tighter than ticks. Of course the County did not help. All they wanted to do was blame it on me. They brought in experts to testify against me that had never examined me or was at the scene of the rescue. The trail lasted several days and the Judge ruled in my favor. I received medical for life. I retired on disability. All was fine until 2010 and the County Claims manager hired a new case manager. She took away 1/2 of the medicine that my treating Doctor had prescribed. She never talked to the treating Doctor, She stated that she was saving the county thousands. While this was pending in court I had a sudden death cardiac event and was life flighted from Manchester to Vanderbilt. I died 2 more times that day. Once while leaving the helipad and once in the cath lab . I was placed in the heart pump so my heart could heal. My ejection fraction was now down below 30%. Not good that is classified as heart failure. I signed up for a National Heart Lung study involving removing stem cells from the bone marrow in my hip centrifuged and then about 4 hours in the cath lab as they injected into my dead heart muscle. They injected 21 times. My ejection fraction improved to almost 40 % for the next year.the it crashed big time to about 14%, So the Doctors Listed me for transplant and then they installed a defibrillator in me and a LVAD. ( A internal heart Pump)  And I waited. I have seveal bleed outs and several close calls.
So while on the transplant list I had seveal false calls for the heart.3rd time is the charm. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving 2014 I received the gift of life. ..... Then I woke up. about 28 hays later. I remember Dr Kebler asking me what I wanted and I said Sweet Tea. She later said she was surprised because I did not ask about my leg. In fact I had been told by the nurses. I knew that was beyond my control. I was glad to be here. I had to learn everything over. Holding a fork, drinking ect. I spent a few more days at Vanderbilt and then transferred to Select Care Rehabilitation due to the fact of being on a ventilator, After 30 days and the vent was removed I was the transferred to Vanderbilt stallworth Rehab. I was able to spend about 30 dAys the before being discharged home.

I began In patient rehab at home. I was started at Results
physiotherapy. I was fitted to a leg... Dr Wigger wanted me to go to Bulow Prosthetics but they insisted on Hanger. I received a OttoBock C Leg Compact. I was told it would do everything I needed. I have repeatedly told the case manager the county and rehab that thiis leg was not right. The case manager had said I had gone as far as I could go. I was devastated, My dream of walking was shattered. I had failed. But not finished..... I had learned that I was responsible for my pwn care several years ago. So I started with the leg. It turns out that the leg was a geriatric knee and was designed for people to be able to stand....Not walk, So I contacted Bulow and meet with scott. He confirmed my suspicion . That leg was not for me. So he arranged me to get a demo C Leg. It locks in whatever my knee position is in like a real leg. So today I out it on. grabbed the walked and walked around 40 feet with no fear of falling. It works and is even water resistant. I am sure given time I will be able to walk with this leg. Without a walker or crutches. Now I wonder what the county is going to do. All along there have been obstacles in my path. I would think after all of this I would know my body pretty well. As far as the County feels I quit... No I took Disability retirement. Not One Thank You for what I did. Yes I am bitter and I think I have a good right to be. See with Worker Comp YOU have no control. I have co=workers and even elected official say you are breaking us or that to you they changed workers comp policy. I do NOT Care I did not VOTE to become self insured. Especially after my first HEART ATTACK WAS RULED WORKERS COMP. By The Court with with medical for life. I was just doing what I was SWORN TO DO!!!! Maybe elected officials should do the same!
