Cancer to Heart Problems

Story image

I had cancer as a teenager, was successfully treated, but 20 years later learned the radiation used has damaged my heart.  I had a mitral valve repair in 2016, which did not go well, and am heading in again for both mitral and tricuspid soon.  Wish to link up with others whose heart problems are a result of radiation treatments.  I feel my cardiologist and highly experienced surgeon underestimated the damage and problems I would face in recommending a repair, but I don't blame them, I blame cancer.  I do feel great about the decisions for the next surgery - tissue mitral valve replacement/tricuspid tightening.  I had years of not being well and not understanding why, despite seeking help - no one understands a young cancer survivor's plight.  Since learning about my heart and gaining help/meds and hopefully soon a better functioning heart, I have hope.  I'm excited to gain energy and life back!  I'm young for a heart patient.  I can't wait to go running, hiking, swimming and keep busy with my young family.  Surgery is a blessing.  Each new day is a gift.

    Raker,
Cancer treatments make for young heart patients. This is a fact I didn't know until like you I started to have heart problems about 10-11 years after cancer treatment. Please Stay positive, keep running, hiking, swimming and busy with your young family. I believe when we are hit with a double whammy like this, the hit is because we are fighters; we persevere. It is not easy we still cry because it hurts and because we don't understand the why's but we continue to put one foot in front of the other. I hope you regained strength from your surgery(s) and are keeping your family super busy. Raker
