2016 AHA Lifestyle Change Award - Central Ohio
After surviving a 4 cm blockage in my "widow maker"& averting a major heart attack, I realized my unhealthy lifestyle had caught up with me. I began seeing a cardiologist who started me on a drug regimen – but as the efficacy of the drugs began to diminish, trusting my instincts, I sought additional help. After a battery of tests, I was told that I was the worst case the Hospital had seen in a long time. Within a few days, I was scheduled for open heart surgery, using an innovative new procedure funded by American Heart Association research, where a bypass was performed while my heart was still beating! During my recovery, I grew determined to get healthy and my outlook on life changed – I realized that there are no “do-overs”. So, I began an exercise routine and to track my daily food intake, resulting in the loss of 70-pounds. I have since retired and become the proud grandfather of five! I can’t imagine living the life I once lived...Things like moving boxes, playing with my grandkids and working out – all would not have been possible!!! After all, "My Family Is Why"
