12 yr stroke survivor afraid of forgetting how to read again!?

My friend is an 83yr old stroke survivor. She re-learned how to read and now reads on a high level. She is afraid that if she does not practice Oral reading for an hour or two daily, she will quickly forget how to read again! She is fluent in speech and very intelligent. She can read silently much more easily and fluently. she repeats and struggles reading aloud. Yet she is afraid that she has to read aloud! (and someone has to listen--which is not pleasant. it is so slowed and strained/repetitive.) Feedback please?
