Aphasia Month--Aphasia 101 Class in my neighborhood, June 14, 2020

Hi All,

I have almost all of the primary heart, cryptogenic stroke, aphasia, TIA, TAVR, Renal stenosis and others (I don't want to bore you!) today (and this month) is Aphasia Awareness I will bore you today about Aphasia...30-40% of people with stroke acquire aphasia...when you lose your language...although most people in the wider public do not know much about aphasia...hence Aphasia Awareness Month!

I was an associate dean at the Heller School at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA when I fell down on the street from my stroke and could not read, write or speak well.

Here are some pictures at my “booth” yesterday in my “Aphasia 101 class” in the neighborhood for Aphasia Month!  I met many people walking (and some driving) all with questions and family experiences of stroke…no one knew anything about aphasia except for one who was a teacher and one a nurse. There were many who have people in their family with stroke (and some who were described as “couldn’t talk”) but none knew that it was called aphasia.

Believe it or not, one fellow (about my age) came by in a unicycle!  He used it when he was young but he have not used it since then.  He ordered a new one and was using it yesterday for the first time in decades.  He said he wanted to do more cardiovascular exercises and still couldn’t to go the gym! Quite something…his wife had a stroke but no aphasia…interesting and educational Aphasia day! Thank you AHA/ASA!  Tom B.
