Recovery Time s/p Cardiac Surgery

I am 52 y/o, 5 weeks post open heart surgery: aortic aneurysm and Tricuspid valve repair and Aortic Valve Replacement. I am still having sternum pain. I am trying to be more active but am concerned about over doing it. Wondering what other people's experiences have been. I am supposed to return to work at the 8 week mark, and am not sure I'll be ready.

    Good morning,

Thank you for sharing your story with the support network. Unfortunately, I'm not a medical professional, so I recommend raising these concerns with your cardiac care team to hear what they recommend for your recovery. I can share some Healthy Lifestyle resources for you to look at during your recovery as well. Please keep us updated on how you're doing!

It's hard for me to remember that clearly since it's been about 10 years but I believe my pains (not only sternum but other areas of my chest) continued beyond that after my bypass surgery. But I do remember that the movement between the two **** halves had finally ceased. I had asked my cardiologist about some of the lingering pains and she explained that they had to cut through a lot to get to my heart and that it could take awhile before the pains completely subside. She also told me that some of my chest numbness may not completely go away. I was content with that and felt that as long as it was "normal" as she had explained it then I could live with it.

    Hope this helps.
