    September is PAD Awareness Month!!!

My Name is Elizabeth Beard, and I am a National Spokeswoman For Go Red For Women and I advocate for PAD. I am a survivor! You are welcome to read my story at goredforwomen.org

I will also have a blog coming out on September 10th for the support newtwork on National PAD Awareness Month.

It is estimated that over 200 million people worldwide have PAD; however less than 50% are aware that they have it. It primarily affects those who are over 50, current or former smokers, or people with diabetes, and also patients that are over 65 who have the same risk factors as those with Heart Disease and Stroke.

If you would like more information on PAD please go to heart.org/pad where there is a fantastic page with all kinds of information for patients and practioners alike!!

I am currently getting ready to volunteer and walk and at our local Heart Walk this coming Saturday in Dallas. It will be an awesome day because for the first time there will be a mission tent soley dedicated to educting the public on PAD. I am so proud to be a part of this inagural event, and I am extremely proud that my vascular surgeon Dr. Russell Lam of Lam Vascular is sponsoring this tent, and our mission in Dallas. This is our 25th anniversary heart walk and we estimate there to be over 60K people in attendance.

Five years ago I could not walk to my mail box and now I can walk 3-5 miles a  day after undergoing a bi-femoral aorta bypass on May 1, 2013. I gave up smoking on 2/6/2012 after 35 years - it was then I was diagnosed with PAD.

I urge everyone to ask your doctor to TAKE YOUR SOCKS OFF and check you for PAD!!

Good morning! I did a bit of research regarding our national plans and am excited to report that we will be recognizing National PAD Awareness Month and raising awareness around a condition affecting 8.5 million adult Americans. We have a month-long campaign planned and ask that you check heart.org and our social feeds, Twitter & Facebook for messaging and activities throughout the month of September. On the Support Network, we will feature a survivor blog and PAD awareness month is listed as one of our National Days and Months to Support.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks Katie

Frank and Maria Diaz have a very dramatic and wonderful survivor story!
