88 year old heart failure patient

My father was diagnosed with heart failure and almost immediately fell into an intense depression.  Repeated asked said he wanted to die.  He has purple legs and feet when using the walker.  He's been a real mess until recently.  He has been ingesting prozac to help with depression.  It looks like it is starting to help him.  I read that HF patients also tend to have low levels of vitamin D and melatonin, a hormone produced in brain.  He has been taking vitamin D and melatonin for a week.  We think he looks much better.  He is getting deeper sleep.  Melatonin  and vitamin D are thought to play a role in heart health.

    Good morning,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and reaching out on behalf of your father. I am very sorry to hear about his diagnosis. As you continue to interact with others here on the Support Network, I hope you'll find that you and your father are not alone in this experience and there are others who have gone through similar things. Unfortunately, I am not a medical professional, but in the meantime, I can share a few resources with you, like this one on Vitamin D and Heart Health, and this one on how Depression Affects Heart Health.

Please keep us updated on how you and your father are doing.

    Best wishes,
