Happy Birthday...

Monday is my birthday.

The 8th Birthday I've had since I suddenly developed a severe cardiac disorder after a viral infection decimated the electrical system in my heart.
The 8th Birthday I've had since we were told, "Without an immediate transplant you have 3 months to live."

The 7th Birthday I've had since an experimental Complex Cardiac Device was implanted to "buy us some time..."
The 7th Birthday I've celebrated since my EF went from 11% to 30%.
The 7th Birthday I've celebrated since my BNP went from 5000+ (on the 100 scale) to under 50.
The 7th Birthday I've celebrated since I suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest and was resuscitated 5 times in one morning, then spent weeks in the hospital before I was stable enough for Cardiac Ablation Surgery.

The 6th Birthday I've celebrated since my EF went from 30% to 45%.
The 6th Birthday I've celebrated since the Kidney Failure, brought on by medications for my cardiac disorders, resolved with no residual effects.

The 5th Birthday I've celebrated since my EF went from 45% to 55%.
The 5th Birthday I've celebrated since the COPD I developed, brought on by my cardiac issues, resolved with no residual effects.

The 4th Birthday I've celebrated since my first Stroke.

The 3rd Birthday I've celebrated outside a hospital in 8 years.

The 2nd Birthday I've celebrated since my TIA.
The 2nd Birthday I've celebrated since the enlarged heart I had, DCM from the viral infection, returned to normal size.
The 2nd Birthday I've celebrated since an Ocular Stroke left me legally blind.

The 1st Birthday I will celebrate in 8 years, with no inpatient hospitalizations in a year.
The 1st Birthday I will celebrate since my sight was restored.
The 1st Birthday I will celebrate with my new Complex Cardiac Device--a new fangled CRT-D already making it's presence known. My EF remains at 55%. My BNP remains under 50. I've gone from a Medical Team that hovered around 50 professionals, to a Core Team of 4.

Every year we celebrate another year of life.
There is a child inside of us when it comes to our birthday.
The sense of fun.
The memories of friendship.
The celebration of all that is good.

We make special plans.
Knowing that one day in the year, our life will be on center stage.
Not just our focus, but also focused on by people with whom we are privileged to share our life.

Someone once said it’s a shame we don’t have a birthday every day.
How true are those words?
We put so much time and energy into that day.
Imagine if each day was spent with similar feelings of preparation and anticipation.

Seize the Day is a saying made popular in movies.
Its’ equally applicable in our lives.
When was the last time you lived as if this was your last day on earth?
Packed it full of experiences, celebrations, friendship and fun...

We let days pass by without really thinking about how we spend them.
Focused on merely surviving the day and all we pack into it, weeks pass without realizing how many opportunities have slipped away.

Work to refocus your life.
Take a few minutes to put a plan into action that reflects the things and the people that are important to you.
Create short-term goals, things you would like to see accomplished.
Take some action each day to bring you closer to these goals.

At the end of each day, look at the goals or the plans you had set.
Ask yourself if you accomplished them.
Reflect on how they affected you and what they added to your life.
Think about how good they made you feel.
Allow your inner self to be reborn as you reflect on the beauty in the world.
Call your family and friends together.
Celebrate together your life. Celebrate your rebirth.

As someone who, in January 2013, was given a 3-month-Expiration Date, let me say...
It's A Great Day To Be Alive...
