Life expectancy following aortic valve replacement
Does anyone know what the life expectancy is following aortic valve replacement with a mechanical valve? I know the valve itself can last up to 20 years but for those patients who do undergo an AVR, do they have a normal life expectancy?

I'm not sure that anyone will be able to accurately assess what that should be. It is certainly a difficult question to answer. I had asked my own cardiologist about this prior to my quintuple bypass and she told me it isn't about longevity but rather about quality of life. She also told me that bypass grafts typically last about ten years which I immediately questioned. She then followed up that she has seen them last beyond 20 years.
I know this doesn't exactly relate to your question but if you ask a healthcare professional about it, you'll probably get similar answers. The point is to appreciate and enjoy what you have and try not to concern yourself with something you have little control over.
