False BP readings

My doctor suspected HBP, based on in-surgery readings, and was planning to put me on beta-blockers. He asked me to take my own readings, in a relaxed state, at home, in order to confirm the HBP. For the first 8 days, my own readings were also high, between 135 and 155. Then, the on impulse, I tried a measurement with my trouser belt and zip opened, and got a reading of 120 systolic!  I confirmed 3 times to check and all values were low. For the next week all readings were low/normal, in and around 120 systolic. I couldn't believe how close I came to going onto HBP medication for something so stupid and simple. Just thought this might help someone.

I am glad he had you do this extra step :).  I can share the information we have on managing high blood pressure with you, just in case it's needed in the future. Best Katie

Umm...this must be such a huge relief! But unless the belt was really tight, wonder if it would've made such a big difference? If you do have visceral belly fat, maybe this is a friendly warning to get rid of it? If you are lean and not carrying belly fat, then its a deeper mystery why this happened!

    Cheers
