Richard Lichtenberg – Cardiac Rehab Rockstar: Thriving with Cardiac Rehab
My cardiac rehab routine has been a major component of my recovery from my heart attack and stent procedures. Although I have completed the monitored portion of my rehab, I continue to exercise at the Heart and Vascular center of University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia at least four days a week. My name is Richard Lichtenberg and this is my story as a Cardiac Rehab Rockstar.
My participation in the cardiac rehabilitation program has been a critical part of my recovery and health. The program not only deals with your physical recovery through the monitored exercise regime, but also includes a lecture series for education about the various environmental influences that affect heart health, a staff nutritionist to guide you towards a heart healthy diet, and a psychologist to help you through the fears and depression that can accompany heart problems. It is a program that assists you in transforming your daily routine and diet to a healthier, heart friendly lifestyle.
Without my participation in the cardiac rehabilitation program, I would be at far more risk of suffering a catastrophic heart incident. The monitored part of the program allowed me to exercise regularly and gradually alleviated my fears of stressing my heart. After the past year of exercise, I am in my best physical condition since college, and I am 65 years old! The staff nutritionist helped me adjust to a far healthier and balanced diet and the classroom lectures gave me a better understanding of the way outside influences affected my health. The lectures covered diet, stress, medications and many more heart, health and lifestyle related subjects.
I truly believe that being a part of the cardiac rehabilitation program has been a major, if not the major, influence in changing my lifestyle to adjust and thrive through and after my heart problems. I am healthier and feel better because of this critical part of my recovery and would greatly encourage anyone that has had heart problems to participate.
